The MERCURY Latino Lens Short Film Challenge


MERCURY has teamed with the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) to find six hot Latino/a Filmmakers.

The MERCURY Latino Lens Short Film Challenge is an opportunity for six Finalists (3 students, 3 Emerging Filmmakers) to receive $10,000 to produce and direct an original short film narrative on digital video (DV), competing for a Grand Prize.

All 6 Final Films produced from the finalist screenplays will be presented in a national on-line contest in October 2006, and let the public select two Grand Prize Winners: One Student and One Emerging Filmmaker. The Grand Prize Winners will receive exclusive screenings in Los Angeles, San Antonio and Miami in November 2006, PLUS venues at NALIP Conference 8 in Newport Beach, March 8 – 10, 2007.

Student Grand Prize Winner receives a $5,000 scholarship & HDV Camera.

Emerging Filmmaker Grand Prize Winner receives a $5,000 cash grant towards their next project & travel/accommodations to the 2007 Sundance Film Festival as part of “NALIPsters in Sundance.”

All 6 Finalists also receive 1-year NALIP membership & benefits, plus invitation to screen at NALIP Conference 8!

EVA LONGORIA, DANNY PINNO AND CARLOS MENCIA JOIN MONICA LOZANO, CHAIR, NCLR BOARD OF DIRECTORS TO ANNOUNCE THE NOMINEES FOR THE NCLR ALMA AWARDS

BEVERLY HILLS, CA (April 4, 2006) – The return of the NCLR ALMA Awards and the nominations were announced today during a press conference at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives and the motion picture The Sentinel), Danny Pino (Cold Case and the motion picture Flicka) and Carlos Mencia (Mind of Mencia) joined Monica Lozano, chair, NCLR Board of Directors, to announce the nominees.

The NCLR ALMA Awards honors outstanding Latino artistic achievement in television, film, and music and the enhancement of the Latino image in the entertainment industry. With the incomparable Eva Longoria as host, the Award show will tape May 7 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and will air as an all-new 90-minute, prime-time special on Monday, June 5 (9:30-11:00 p.m., ET/PT), on the ABC Television Network.

The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S., created the ALMA Awards in 1995 as part of NCLR's strategy to promote fair, accurate and balanced portrayals of Latinos in the media. The show was named "ALMA" (Spanish for "spirit" or "soul") which represents the determined spirit of the Latino community.

Jeff Margolis, Janet Murguia and David Chavez are executive producers of "The 2006 NCLR ALMA Awards." The show, from Jeff Margolis Productions, will tape on May 7 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Producers are Eva Longoria, Tisha Fein, Gloria Fujita O'Brien and Mick McCullough. The director is Ron De Moraes.

San Diego Latino Film Festival

Celebration of Latino Film, Music and Art Scheduled for March 9 – 19, 2006 at UltraStar’s Mission Valley at Hazard Center

San Diego – Media Arts Center San Diego's prestigious and internationally recognized San Diego Latino Film Festival, soars into its' 13th year with impressive and exhilarating activities, special events and initiatives. Taking place March 9 – 19, 2006 at UltraStar’s Mission Valley at Hazard Center, the festival will feature more than 100 film screenings celebrating the best in Latino cinema from around the world. Additional activities include Sonido Latino concerts, Arte Latino art exhibitions, festive galas and educational workshops. Film highlights include the American made documentary Favela Rising and feature films Al Otro Lado from Mexico and Romeo & Juliet Get Married from Brazil. On Thursday, February 23rd TotalAXIS and NALIP will join once again for our Shorts FLIXfest. The event Q&A will be moderated by Producer Erick Garcia and representatives from TotalAXIS and NALIP and will include the filmmakers.

3:52 is a 35mm short film about addiction, life, hope and perspectives. America Fererra plays Kate, a young woman who goes on a spiritual journey to recover from an alcohol addiction and must face the demons of the disease that haunt her. The film is currently in post-production.

of their founding member nations is now a Fascist State.

NATO/OTAN is an inside look at the global debate whether to wage war in order to re-establish peace or to ignore a repressive regime to preserve stability.
